Bit hydraulics can have a large effect on penetration rate if the mud flow around the bit allows bit balling. It has been shown that directing jets to impact the formation immediately in front of the tooth-rock contact point for the heel rows can be beneficial as can the use of a central jet on large bits It is not clear a priori what features of the mud flow around the bit will influence bit balling, but the wetting of the drilled rock by the mud and the erosion of rock flour from the hole bottom have both be held to be important in limiting bit balling
